Those of you with bulkheads may know that the brick color is only a primer – it needs to have a finish coat. Last year, I completed the task (NOT fun) using a Rustoleum product.

It looks good, but the “gas lifters” no longer work. I didn’t paint the lifters, but nonetheless they are non-functioning. This means that the bulkhead doors are VERY heavy to open. Yesterday the wind blew one side shut and I decided that it was time to do some research to get it fixed.

There is a label on the inside of one of the doors with the name, Bilco and a serial number. I went to Bilco.com and called the 800 number to figure out what size gas lifter I need. I found out that the unit is still under warranty and they are sending me replacement parts. I am not anticipating that the installation will be too challenging but I am very happy to have saved the $50 replacement cost.
