Neighborhood Caring Network: Street Coordinators named

caring

Hickory Woods is a community that is caring and helpful to our neighbors. The Neighborhood Caring Network/Meal Train has recently been formed to provide meals for someone who is sick, healing from an accident or recovering from surgery.  It is a way to help our Hickory Woods neighbors through a rough patch.

If you find yourself in need or know of a neighbor that could use some help, simply contact your Meal Train Street Coordinator and the wheels will be set in motion.

The Street Coordinators are:

  • Pepper Hill    Karen Wilson                978-807–5274    wilson2kks@comcast.net
  • Quarry            Monique Pierce             203-414-3751   moniquepierce782@gmail.com
  • Tavern Hill/Church        Maryellen McGrath     603-930-9937   memkng@msn.com
  • Black Forest                      Karen Quinn                 508-572-6295  kquinn59w@gmail.com

The coordinator will gather the dietary particulars:

  • Food Allergies or dietary restrictions (low salt, etc.)
  • Food likes/dislikesmeal-train
  • Preferred delivery times
  • How many meals per week and duration

The Neighborhood Caring Network/Meal Train stresses that this program is for your convenience and to relieve stress.  All matters will be held in strict confidence.

If you would like to be part of the team of chefs, please contact your street coordinator and she will add you to the list of volunteer chefs. Further information will be given to you of how the program works.

PANDEMIC INFO: Fully vaccinated? No need to wear masks indoors or outside

5/13/2021 CDC announces that fully vaccinated individuals do not need masks either inside or outside. Exception is airline travel and health care settings or for those who are immunocompromised. Caution: Guidelines could change again if the pandemic gets worse.

5/8/2021 New Guidelines: Universal Best Practices LINK

4/16/2021 New Hampshire Governor ends mask mandate READ ARTICLE
Another article further explains Sununu’s reasoning:

The mask mandate was the last major statewide restriction Sununu imposed. Sununu said it was logical for it to be the first one lifted once circumstances changed and enough people were vaccinated….But wearing face coverings in public remains the proper practice when people can’t maintain social distancing, Sununu said.

Additional changes are coming:

In another major move, Sununu said that on May 7 he will end all industry-specific restrictions, such as seating limits and plastic barrier requirements, and replace them with a universal set of “best practices.”

4/1/2021 Be aware that your site / appointment may have changed
A neighbor has shares some important advice: [We] got our first COVID shots on March 5th at Londonderry and at the time, they scheduled our second shot for April 8th. Last night I received an email from the CDC saying that I had not scheduled my second shot. I decided to call the 211 number to confirm our next appointment. When I called them today, they told me that when the location was changed from Londonderry to Salem, and when the new appointment website became active, all the second appointments were cancelled and I needed to make another appointment. We were fortunate because we were able to get an even better appointment for 6:15 today. …[advice for neighbors] that if they had their first vaccine shot in Londonderry, they may want to call that 211 number to reconfirm to make sure their next appointment was not cancelled.

3/25/2021 Sununu announced that all NH residents ages 16+ will be eligible to be vaccinated.

3/17/2021 Vaccination site moved from Exit 4 in Londonderry to Rockingham Mall in Salem. You should receive notification; previous appointments are valid.

3/15/2021 When will you receive your stimulus check?
It’s easy to check by using this IRS link. You need to put in your social security number and date of birth to identify yourself. You can find out what you will receive, when it will arrive and to what account it will be deposited (or mailed).

3/9/2021 The CDC has issued guidelines for how fully-vaccinated people can safely gather. For the fully vaccinated, small groups can safely gather. Also, small groups gathering with non-vaccinated from one household who do not have underlying health issues is OK. Hugs for all!

2/5/2021 New – Those receiving #1 dose of vaccine will be automatically scheduled for #2 READ the article in Union Leader

2/4/2021  Governor Sununu announced that there are new appointments for #2 vaccines now in the VAMS system. If your appointment is not within the recommended time for the second dose, go into the VAMS system, cancel your appointment and reschedule. (Note – it works! One neighbor went from 4/3 to 2/23.)

1/30/2021 First week of vaccines for 65+
So exciting that dose #1 is available for those 65+. Most neighbors had no issues – just a lot ofvaccine waiting in our cars. The National Guard personnel running the program were kind, efficient and personable. For those who signed up for dose #2 and were unable to get an appointment within the recommended window (most got dates around 8 weeks out!) there is hope. On Tuesday 2/1 at 8:00 AM, the VAMS site will allow those looking for earlier dates to schedule appointments. READ the explanation from WMUR.

November 15, 2020 NH Vaccine Distribution Plan – 5 Group Priority List (Union Leader)
The five groups (quoted from the article):

Phase 1a: Because more than 80% of New Hampshire’s deaths from COVID-19 have been related to long-term care settings, residents of those facilities will get the first shots, along with health-care workers and first responders.

Phase 1b: The second group will include older adults in other group living settings, such as senior complexes, and people of all ages who have other conditions that put them at “significantly” higher risk.

Phase 2: Vaccines will be offered to school teachers and staff, child-care workers, critical workers in other high-risk settings, people with conditions that put them at moderately higher risk, those in homeless shelters or group homes, prisoners and prison staff, and all other seniors.

Phase 3: This group includes young adults, children and workers in occupations “important to the functioning of society and at increased risk of exposure” who were not included in the earlier phases.

Phase 4: The final group is everyone else.

September 1, 2020: Your Board of Directors has revisited the rules for use of HW facilities during this Covid period. For the maximum safety of all residents the Club House and outside facilities will remain as originally designated in response to Covid precautions:
USE OF THE CLUB HOUSE AND ALL OUTSIDE FACILITIES ARE TEMPORARILY OPEN TO RESIDENTS ONLY.

Follow-up email from the BOD 9/3/2020: In response to comments from some residents we would like to clarify the following. We regret the latest communication about not opening facilities to guests sounded like a demand, our intent was to highlight the latest of the many communications regarding this subject.  After seeking legal guidance, we want to clarify that our objective is to ensure our community remains as safe as possible during the Covid-19 pandemic.  We ask that all members of the community respect our request to limit all guests from using the Clubhouse and all outside facilities.  While we are unable to enforce this request, it is our hope that all residents will consider the community as a whole when deciding if they will comply with this request.  We are aware also that some residents feel that the request is too restrictive while others would prefer more restrictions.
As evidenced globally, no one knows the right or best way to protect against Covid and neither do we.
Sincerely,
The Hickory Woods Board of Directors

EPA2IS YOUR HAND SANITIZER EPA APPROVED? Great info, shared by Ellen Medeiros: Here is a resource that will confirm if a hand sanitizer or disinfectant is approved by the EPA to be effective against Covid-19. Not all products are. Use this link to the EPA site.  Enter the EPA Reg # of the product, usually found on the back of the container. It will let you know if the product is approved. Not long ago I purchased a hand sanitizer container only to learn it was not approved for Covid-19. Buyer beware!

8/7/2020 Reminder on wiping down exercise equipment: We have had a few comments regarding cleaning of exercise equipment after use.  For anyone who uses the gym, it is at your own risk, AND the cleaning of equipment after use is considered a courtesy for your neighbors.

7/12/2020 Use of Clubhouse outdoor amenitites (From the HW BOD) It has come to our attention that the current clubhouse outdoor restrictions are not what we, as a community, want.  Because of this, your Board of Directors has decided to extend the use of clubhouse outside facilities to house guests of Unit Owners.  Please remember that any use of the facilities do not include the use of any inside facilities and per our Bylaws, all guests must always be accompanied by at least one Unit Owner.  Waivers for any guests also need to be signed.

7/12/2020 SCAM ALERTS Targeting aging adults, charitable giving, stimulus payments etc

7/4/2020 RESTRICTIONS ON CLUBHOUSE USE From the HW BOD  It has been a while since the email outlining the use of our Clubhouse and outside amenities was sent, so this is to remind everyone that the use of our Clubhouse and outside amenities continues to be restricted to Unit Owners only.   Use also continues to be at your own risk.  While we are witnessing a gradual opening up of many businesses in New Hampshire, we have a community that is at a higher risk for serious effects of Covid-19. We appreciate your continued understanding.

THE WALKERS (Anonymous)walkers2

I see the walkers walk along
And pass my house each day.
Some walk alone, some walk in pairs
Or groups 6 feet away.

They walk with stealth and for their health.
Some walk to just unwind.
And gather all their thoughts until
They find some peace of mind.

Some walk along in wind and rain
But certainly in sun.
Some walk so fast and some walk slow
But seldom do they run.

As they tread home and pass my house
Some nod, some wave and smile.
Some even take the time to stop
And talk a little while.

As they go by and look aheadheartbreak2
Some sigh yet walk until
They make it up my road that’s known
As that darn Heartbreak Hill.

New rule concerning Estate, Garage and Yard Sales

August 19, 2020BOD

Neighbors,

At today’s Board of Directors meeting your Board passed the following new rule in regard to Estate, Garage and Yard Sales:
 .
15.  Estate, Garage or Yard sales within Hickory Woods are not allowed.  Hickory Woods is a private Homeowners Association (HOA) community and as such each Unit Owner’s actions affect the entire community.   All of these activities encourage visitation of people from outside Hickory Woods which can have an adverse impact on the privacy, property rights and financial liabilities of all Unit Owners.
.
Attached please find the updated Hickory Woods Rules in its entirety.  It will also be posted on the Hickory Woods website as well as the New Star portal.
 .
Sincerely,
Your Hickory Woods Board of Directors

HUGE kudos to THE SISTERS:

FINAL TALLY: With the generosity of our community as well as a sizable donation from a company outside our community we were able to collect 5 car loads of groceries and have enough funds to purchase 51 – $25.00 gift cards from our local grocery stores.  They will be distributed by the food bank to individuals who need assistance.

fooddrive1From the Sisters: Thank you to the HW Community for your generous contributions to a very successful food drive. We have an amazing community!  Thanks, also to Sterling and Laura Hough, Vern Loschi, George Slaney, Bob Medeiros and Rick Newman for assistance with pick-up, sorting and distribution of the items.

UPDATE 5/9/2020: From Ellen Medeiros  “I received a call from Kay and Dick Doyle of the St. Jude’s Food Pantry,  They called to thank us again for the abundance of food and donations. It was one of the largest donations they ever received and are very grateful.  Dick was impressed as to how well organized and helpful we were and how we worked as a team.  He was also pleased with the quality of the food that was donated.

He said that at this time of year the Post Office traditionally runs a food drive that benefits their pantry, however, the food drive did not take place this year. He said “As one door closes, another opens”.  That  door led to us, Hickory Woods made a difference.  Our donation was larger than what they ever received from the food drive that did not happen.”

We will be holding a food drive on Wednesday, May 6,  to help the St. Jude Food Pantry in  Londonderry. The food pantry is a volunteer-run mission at the church that supports individuals and families in need.   fooddrive

During these challenging times,  there is currently a shortage of the following items and we are hoping our neighbors in Hickory Woods will help us “Make A Difference”.

  • Small packaged snacks for children
  • Tea
  • Coffee
  • Canned Meat, for ex: Chicken, Spam
  • Crackers
  • Canned Fruit
  • Small juice boxes

On Wednesday, May 6th  (by 10:00 a.m.), please place your items in a bag or box and leave it on your front porch.  We will be by to collect them that day.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution, we will shop for the needed items. Before May 6th, please leave an envelope (include your name) with Joyce Newman, 38 Quarry Rd.  Make checks out to Joyce Newman (they will be purchasing Marketbasket Gift Cards).

If you have any questions, please contact Ellen Medeiros 617 285-4529

  • 2018 HWs Kayak Event

On July 14th, 37 HWs residents took to the water on the Contoocock River in Concord NH. This was the largest group ever to participate in the annual kayak outing hosted by the Putnam’s. For some, this was their first time ever kayaking.

The day began with everyone getting in to either their single or double kayak then paddling up river a few miles to Daisy Beach. Once there, many docked their kayaks, stretched their legs and socialized. There was a rope swing where some gave a fleeting thought to swinging and jumping into the water. Only one brave sole, Rick Newman, entertained the group with a jump that was rated a 10 from the audience! (see pic below).

Then the group paddled back to the launch area where all were treated to a fabulous BBQ lunch catered by Smokeshow BBQ of Concord. The groups sat around in a circle and shared experiences with each other. Based upon the smiles in the pictures, it is safe to say that everyone came away with some great memories. You can view the pictures of the event by clicking here.

Thanks to all who joined in on the event. Events like this prove the HWs IS THE BEST COMMUNITY!

The Putnam’s sure have to work hard next year to beat this year’s event!

  • Lake Massabesic in Candia
  • Merrimack River in Concord

  • Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham
  • Canobie Lake in Salem
  • Big Island Pond in Salem
  • Cobbett’s Pond in Windham
  • Pickleball – 2018 Season

    pickleball

Pickleball combines the features of tennis, ping pong, and badminton. The ball looks like a wiffle ball and the game is played on a court that is much smaller than tennis or about the size of a badminton court. It is one of the fastest growing sports and very popular with active adults including men and women. Games are typically played with four players. We are fortunate at Hickory Woods to have our own pickleball court so give it a try if you’ve never played before.

Our 2018 season is finally getting off the ground now that the weather is improving. We’ll continue using SignUpGenius this year to schedule and sign up for games. Using the sign up system is strongly encouraged to ensure a session has both enough players and, conversely, not too many. If you have not received an electronic invitation to use the signup system, please send an email to Pat Pannese at abbeysys@outlook.com requesting a Pickleball signup invitation.

This year we will try the following levels of play:
    1. Beginner – for those who have never played or still honing basic skills or still learning proper positioning and score keeping.
    2. Advanced Beginner – for those who know how to play, know how to keep score, can keep rallies going, and can consistently serve without faulting
    3. Open – for anyone with skills beyond the Beginner level. This session provides an opportunity for Advanced Beginners to test their skills with Advanced players. Competitiveness of play will depend upon attendees.
    4. Advanced – for players who are comfortable with a more aggressive and competitive game.

    Buying a paddle
Paddles can be purchased at your local sporting goods stores, PickleBallCentral.com, and Amazon.com among others. Paddles come in variety of materials, weights, and grip sizes. Wooden paddles are not recommended because of their weight. If you’re looking to find the best paddle for you there is a very good buying guide on the PickleBallCentral.com web site (link below) that will even help you determine your grip size.

    Londonderry Senior Resource Committee

John Goglia advises that the Londonderry Senior Resources Committee (SRC) will be presenting feedback from the ten over 55 Londonderry communities to the Town Council on 6/19 at 7:00 PM. Included in that presentation are several issues relevant to HW including senior property taxes, road maintenance, road lighting and more.

The SRC is presenting their outreach findings and only the town council has the authority to address any of these issues. These town meetings are televised on local channels 2 or 3.

The assistant town manager is already looking into solutions to address current and future senior transportation issues as identified previously by the SRC. John G. will keep us apprised of any action or non-action taken by the town on senior issues for the next couple of years.

7/29 Kayak Excursion in Groton on Nashua River

    From Alan Putnam:IMG_0489

Kris and I are planning to plan our annual kayaking excursion on July 29th.  Last year’s event had a large group of HW residents floating down the Merrimack River.  We had a few who were novices and found it very relaxing and fun.  This year we would like to propose we go to Groton MA to paddle the calm waters of the Nashua River.  The current is so calm that you can easily paddle in either direction making it possible to leave and return to the same location.  Nashoba Paddler in Groton offers kayak/canoe rentals as well as launching your own kayaks for those who already own them.

We are planning to go with a group of interested paddlers on Saturday, July 29th at 8:30 am from the Clubhouse.  Once at Nashoba Paddler, we can paddle for 2 to 3 hours then all go out to lunch afterward.  If we get 6 or more renters, the people who rent will get a 10% discount.  For those who have their own kayaks, there is a $7 fee to launch from their facility.  Please see their website for additional information.

If you are interested in joining us on this excursion, please respond to Allan Putnam @blindsuccess@gmail.com by June 25th.  I want to encourage those who have never kayaked before to try it.  It is a low impact sport requiring very limited upper body strength.  You should experience no soreness afterward as well.  Today’s kayaks are very sturdy and are difficult to flip over.  Most people that never tried to sport before are amazed on how easy and pleasurable it is.  If you wish to try kayaking before committing to this event, I will be happy to take you out on Robinson Pond in Hudson to try it in our very safe and secure kayaks.  We have introduced kayaking to a few of our residents who purchased their own and now love the sport.

I hope we can get a large group together again this year!  Feel free to contact me with any questions.

    Happy Paddling!

    5/7 HW Golf Open: Results

    DRUM ROLL…. [from John Goglia]:

21  players showed up. 1 team was 1 over par. 3 teams were tied at 1 under par. Everyone said they enjoyed the afternoon.

Team #2:  Dennis Fragala, Ralph Armstrong, Larry Martin and John Goglia have bragging rights at 3 under par due mainly to Dennis’ long drives and Ralph and Larry’s birdie putts.

All in all I would say we should do something like this again but we’ll have to wait and see what the rumor mill churns up.

    First HW Spring Golf Event

All HW professional, intermediate, amateur, novice and beginner golfers are welcome and encouraged to participate in the 1st Ever HW Spring Golf Event.

This is designed to be a fun early season tune-up for all of us. There are no prizes, awards or ceremonies just forgettable memories!

It will be a nine hole “captain’s choice” best ball format held on Sunday, May 7th at Hidden Creek GC, Litchfield, NH at 2:30pm.

The cost is $36 with cart or $25 walking payable directly to the Hidden Creek GC on 5/7/17.
Positive responses only and any questions can be directed to John Goglia at jgogs@comcast.net or 603-203-4888 before 4/28/17.
